Home for the Holidays: When Being Away Is Harder for Our Veterans

Home for the Holidays: When Being Away Is Harder for Our Veterans

December is often wrapped in images of warmth—family dinners, shared traditions, laughter, and lights glowing in familiar homes. But for many veterans, the holidays can be one of the most difficult times of the year.

For those who have served, being “home for the holidays” is not always simple. Some veterans are separated from family by distance, deployment memories, or strained relationships. Others carry the emotional weight of loss, trauma, or experiences that make the season feel isolating rather than joyful.

At Veterans Action Group Buffalo Soldiers of America (VAGBSA), we recognize that while the world celebrates, many veterans are quietly enduring a season that reminds them of what they’ve sacrificed.

When the Holidays Bring Silence Instead of Celebration

Military service often requires time away from loved ones during holidays—missed birthdays, empty chairs at the table, and years spent far from home. Even after service ends, those memories can linger. The holidays can resurface feelings of grief, survivor’s guilt, anxiety, or loneliness.

For some veterans, the season highlights:

  • Distance from family or support systems
  • The loss of fellow service members
  • Difficulty adjusting to civilian life
  • Financial or housing challenges
  • Mental health struggles that feel heavier during winter months

You Are Not Alone This Season

Veterans are trained to be strong, resilient, and self-reliant—but no one should have to carry the weight of the holidays alone. At VAGBSA, we work year-round to remind veterans and their families that support exists, especially during times when emotions run high.

Community matters. Connection matters. And reaching out is not a weakness—it is a courageous step toward healing.

How We Support Veterans During the Holidays

Throughout December, VAGBSA remains committed to standing with veterans who may be struggling. Our work focuses on:

  • Connecting veterans to support services and resources
  • Providing outreach and advocacy for those in need
  • Creating safe spaces where veterans feel seen and valued
  • Strengthening community partnerships to reduce isolation

How You Can Make a Difference This December

The smallest acts of kindness can have the greatest impact. Checking in on a veteran, sharing a warm meal, offering a listening ear, or supporting organizations dedicated to veteran care can transform someone’s holiday experience.

Together, we can make sure no veteran feels forgotten while the rest of the world celebrates.

A Message to Our Veterans

If this season feels heavy, please know this: you are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone. Your service matters. Your story matters. And there is a community ready to support you—during the holidays and beyond.

From all of us at VAGBSA, we honor your sacrifice and hold space for your journey this December.
